Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The cute animal animations and design will attract a young audience.
  • The app encourages students to distinguish different note lengths and pitches to develop their musical "ears".
  • Students will enjoy picking notes and creating their own songs.

Considerations

  • The concepts are not explained appropriately for the target audience.
  • The navigation is not intuitive and students may be unclear if their answers were correct or wrong.
  • The cute animations confuse the appropriate representation of notes.

Mindprint Expert Review

This ls a cute app to teach students to learn their musical notes including placement on the scale, pitch and length, but it is ultimately difficult to navigate, provides poor explanations for young students, and the cute animations interfere with the educational value. The app begins with a brief tutorial explaining musical concepts. The tutorial font is tiny, the explanations too brief, and it uses challenging vocabulary for young elementary students without voice over for help. The cute little animal faces throughout the app will attract the young audience, but the using the animal heads to represent the notes interferes with the correct note length and placement on the staff. The game requires students to listen to a series of notes and then appropriately place them on the staff. While this activity is excellent practice in concept, even the easy levels require students to distinguish between different notes including sharps and flats and then place the correct notes on the staff. Students may enjoy creating their own songs on this app, but as an instructional tool parents may want to find a more instructional alternative.
