Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The adjectives range from easy to challenging and creatures are drawn from historical figures (e.g. Joan of Arc) to common animals, so students will learn but not feel overly challenged.
  • The card illustrations are bright, interesting and engaging.
  • The game provides every player the opportunity to be creative, speak and communicate decisions.

Considerations

  • Disagreements could arise because of the subjectivity of the judging, but the game rotates the judge to mitigate this issue.
  • Younger children may be unfamiliar with some of the historical figures, animals, and vocabulary words and may not feel comfortable.
  • Parents may want to remove a few of the cards if playing with younger children (a fox smoking a cigarette, a scary-looking Jack the Ripper).

Mindprint Expert Review

UnNatural Selection is a clever, fun family game that can be used to improve vocabulary, general knowledge and creative thinking. The game requires three or more players who can play well cooperatively to make this game enjoyable and successful. One player begins as judge and deals all other players three cards. Each player chooses a creature card (shark, Ghengis Khan, T-Rex, e-coli, etc.) that he believes is most likely to win in a battle. Once the anonymous selections are made, the judge turns the cards over and each player must add the adjectives on the remaining two cards (tired, angry, clumsy, etc.) to either enhance or disarm the creatures. The judge decides which modified creature would most likely win if they engaged in battle. That player wins the round. The player who is judge rotates around the circle. The game includes 170 cards, so play can continue as long as desired without being repetitious. Students have the opportunity to be creative, learn new adjectives, animals and historical figures (provided a knowledgeable person plays to provide explanations), and, as judge, speak to a captive audience to explain decisions. UnNatural Selection is a great activity that can provide wonderful teaching opportunities when played with the right group.
