Pros

  • Each virtual lesson is aligned with a printable lesson from the e-book which explains concepts and vocabulary.

Considerations

  • Premise of the game is very negative, the entire world is in deep financial despair, which might disturb very sensitive students.
  • Glossary terms and e-book lessons will require further explanation from a knowledgeable adult for most students.
  • The amount of reading and detail on the screen may be overwhelming for students with visual, reasoning, and/or reading weaknesses.

Mindprint Expert Review

Gen i Revolution is a role play strategy game which teaches investor education but should be supervised by a teacher or knowledgeable adult who can explain economic terms and concepts. The site is free as is the accompanying glossary and resource e-book which includes 21 printable lessons covering topics such as financial markets and the US economy. Students begin by choosing operatives for their team based on their special powers, expertise, and point value. Examples of special powers include education strategy, human capital, and opportunity cost. Students prepare for their mission by choosing from the situation map. There are 15 missions in total and each shares the goal of helping people in dire financial trouble due to worldwide financial despair. For example, for Mission 1 “Building Wealth for the Long Term,” the user must “convince Angela to invest her company’s 401K Plan so she can start building wealth in the long run.” Each mission is completed by answering a series of questions, and the user gets promoted after successfully completing a mission until all 15 problems are solved and economic world order is restored.The printable lessons align with the missions and concepts, and new vocabulary should be learned before playing. Overall, in conjunction with teaching the lessons, this site may provide an enjoyable way for students to learn about finance and demonstrate what they have learned while developing strategy skills. However, it is designed as a classroom supplement, so students using independently will need a knowledgeable adult nearby who is able to explain economic concepts, help with unfamiliar vocabulary terms, and be ready to provide more extensive help for students who might struggle with visual, reasoning, or reading weaknesses.
