Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The app has a good visual design to appeal to a broad age range, and eight different categories to appeal to a variety of interests.
  • There are three levels of difficulty and a two player option (based on speed) to make this a good challenge for a range of abilities.
  • The use of silhouette shapes requires students to pay close attention to visual details in addition to working on their visual memory skills.

Considerations

  • The title of the app is off-putting for older students even though they could easily be challenged by this app.
  • Some students may not find the black silhouette pictures engaging.
  • Students cannot track their progress over time, only the best score at each level.

Mindprint Expert Review

Matching is a well-designed app that allows students to play the traditional memory/concentration game as a single player game or compete on a single iPad with two players. Players can choose to play with 8, 12 or 20 cards. Parents can use the number or letter cards with younger children, or students can choose among eight themes including animals, sports, flowers and tools. The cards use pastel backgrounds with black silhouettes, making this a good alternative to the traditional brightly colored matching game cards and giving the game an age-appropriate feel for all ages (despite the product name). This picture design also requires students to pay close attention to visual details and shapes, enhancing the challenge for older students and perhaps making it too much of a challenge for the youngest students if they were playing with all 20 cards. The app has a small timer running at the top of the screen to track the high score at each of the three difficulty levels which cannot be hidden. In general, memory/concentration can be a great way to help students improve on working and short-term memory. This is a high quality version that also develops visual detail skills and has a great simultaneous two-player option.
