Motivate Reluctant Readers through Variety

If your student dislikes reading traditional books

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Offer a variety of reading options to motivate students who are reluctant to read or are reading below grade level, since motivation to read can be a key driver of reading success. The following are a few examples of reading material for students who tend to avoid reading:
  2. Comic books. The combination of pictures and words can be motivating for struggling readers. While some adults frown upon comic books, they are now referred to as graphic novels and some can be quite sophisticated.
  3. Magazines. Help students find a magazine that meets their interest. Magazines are typically full of pictures and photographs to supplement the text, leading to more ease in comprehension. For home, a subscription in the student's name gives something to look forward to in the mail.
  4. Cook books. Well-illustrated cook books can encourage students to read the recipes, the background and follow the directions.
  5. Sports page. Encourage sports enthusiasts to read the sports page of the newspaper daily.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Research shows that the amount of time a student spends reading is the best predictor of reading achievement. Motivation is important for all students, but particularly for students with reading challenges. Give students options that align with their interests, and they will be more likely to want to take on the challenge.
