Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Students can see a brief explanation from the author after every question and see other user explanations if they are available.
  • There is no timer so students can spend as much time as necessary to answer questions. Though this may not fully prepare students for the authentic testing environment.
  • There is only one problem on screen at a time, so students are not overwhelmed or distracted.

Considerations

  • Students receive an unhappy face if they ask for help by clicking "don't know" or answer incorrectly.
  • Explanations are brief and are likely to be insufficient to help most students.
  • Adults will need to create their own pods to hide the grade from students who might be performing below grade level.

Mindprint Expert Review

This free website is a reasonable resource for authentic standardized test taking materials, but only the most conscientious students will use this site independently. Questions are derived from reputable sources including Kaplan(R), Open Stax(R), and Manhattan Prep(R). Students can search the site for a question set, title of exam (SAT, GRE, etc.), topic (music appreciation, social studies, etc.), grade level, or Common Core standard. Length of quizzes varies by level and topic, ranging from 10 questions for Common Core quizzes to 37 questions for calculus. Students answer a series of multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions. They are immediately see if they are correct, and they have the option to view a concise explanation from the author and other users. Explanations could be helpful if the student has a reasonable understanding of the topic, but they may not be of much use if the student is confused since they are brief and do not provide diagrams where they could be helpful. Students also can see how other students answered, which might be interesting but not particularly instructional. The site does not use a timer, which might be good for anxious students or those with slower processing speed, but students also will be unable to gauge their pace for an authentic testing situation. Teachers or parents can create and publish their own problem sets to share with students, which can be a nice way to disguise grade levels. Adults can easily track a student's progress and overall performance, but they cannot drill down on specific problems. Overall, this site can be a reasonably good choice to help students practice for standardized tests even though it does not simulate testing conditions..
