Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • This app provides practical math word problems on a variety of interesting topics which could successfully engage children in a new way.
  • The app encourages students to handle mental math problems by working with a parent.
  • Each topic comes with three different levels so parents can choose the right level and enable children to feel successful by starting at an easier level and moving to harder levels and/or work with multiple children at different levels.

Considerations

  • This is not an app most children in the target age range could use very easily on their own -- parents who are not comfortable explaining new math concepts to their children may find this a bad choice.
  • While a math problem a day is a great idea, most children are not at their best critical thinking skills right before bedtime so the name of the app could mislead parents on when to use this app.
  • The paragraphs of reading on the topic may be too lengthy for younger children and/or those with weak listening comprehension--parents may find they never reach the word problem as a result.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a wonderful word problem math app but will require significant parental involvement and patience to make it a successful tool for most children. The app provides a daily topic with a few paragraphs of information (e.g. skyscrapers, starfish, National Doughnut Day) which will engage children and reinforce general knowledge. Parents can choose from three levels of math word problems related to the day's topic . The math problems are well-written and cover a range of skills intended to exercise a child's mental math skills. The choice of the terms "Wee Ones", "Little Kids" and "Big Kids" for the categories is unfortunate since the skills required are often not reflective of the audiences and could upset older children or misguide parents on which category to select. The assumption is that parents will do this app with the child which is necessary because the stories are written with font and vocabulary that will be challenging for an elementary school student to use independently and many of the problems come with no explanation of answers. Parents choosing to spend time with a child(ren) as the publisher intended will find the time well spent, but do not expect children to do this one on their own.
