Scan Magazines to Strengthen Visual Attention

If your student struggles to notice or focus on visual details

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Students will strengthen visual attention with this magazine scanning game.
  2. Student Activity: This is a good activity to suggest to parents for home practice. Pick a magazine that is of interest to the child, whether it is Sports Illustrated, National Geographic for Kids, Highlights or a comic book, and have them scan and mark it up with an objective. Give the student a set amount of time, such as 30 seconds, to circle all the letter As or all the instances of "the". If the student is reluctant, work together. Show the student how to use a finger or pencil to scan one line at a time. Keep a daily chart and see the highest number the child can find.
