Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The app reinforces the process of scientific discovery in an experiential way.
  • Students have as much time and trial-and-error as they need.
  • The app is quite simple, yet offers a unique challenge.

Considerations

  • The app has no explanations, so students can learn the "what happens" but not the "why".
  • The student's found compounds are listed in the right side bar, and students will need to continuously scroll up and down which could be difficult for those with weaker working or short-term memory.

Mindprint Expert Review

This clever app will be enjoyed by some, but it is best for those students truly curious about science. The student begins the game with the four basic compounds in nature: water, fire, earth, and air. The student drags and drops pictures of those four compounds to combine and form new compounds such as mud, gunpowder, and rain. The new compounds are saved to the student's library, and can be used to create even more compounds. Students can take as much time as needed to combine items with the goal to create all 470 potential compounds. The graphics are quite simple yet still engaging. There is no timer, and students can save their work. Unfortunately, students cannot go backwards and see how they created a compound, though they can re-create as often as they would like. Overall, this is a good, slow-paced app that can teach students earth science with an unusual approach.
