Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Each stage includes only one problem and students are given a break after three or four problems, making this a good choice for younger students and those with weaker attention.
  • The interactive nature of each problem, moving the vegetables one by one, can be an effective way to reinforce the concepts for many students.
  • App has limited negative feedback and the timer only appears after the problem is finished.

Considerations

  • In the free version, problems may be interrupted with annoying invitations to upgrade.
  • Even advanced students must progress through every problem and use the visual aids even if they can solve the problem in their heads.
  • With only one problem per level, students who struggle might have insufficient practice or understanding.

Mindprint Expert Review

Lumio Farm Factor is a cutely-designed instructional math app that reinforces a basic conceptual understanding of multiplication and division through a series of brief problems. The free trial gives a child 8 multiplication and one division problem, and the full version includes 60 total problems. The 60 problems will be sufficient for most students to solidify their basic conceptual understanding, but it will not develop math fact fluency or automaticity and struggling students may need adult help to understand the concepts. The app teaches multiplication as the process of repeated addition using vegetables from the farm. The first problem is simple grouping and then problems progress slowly through the concepts of adding like groups and re-grouping. Each problem has a brief text explanation, but advanced students are likely to ignore it and struggling students might not understand it. There is limited negative feedback as incorrect answers are met with a blue x , a “handy hint” explanation and an example of how to do the problem correctly. The timer impacts the number of stars a player receives, but it only appears after the problem is solved. After students complete three or four problems, they are rewarded with a short animated story which can be a nice break. This app can be helpful to ensure conceptual understanding but it is not for everyone. Students with good understanding will find the app tedious to progress through each level. Students who struggle might need an adult to support them through the exercises since there is limited repetition and the explanations could be confusing. The app will work best to help students with a basic foundation to solidify their knowledge. These students are likely to appreciate the colorful graphics, interactivity, animated breaks and brevity of each exercise.

LEARNING BENEFITS
Farm Factor introduces the tricky topics of multiplication and division. Using concrete objects and models (veggies, boxes, and arrays), learners don't just memorize facts; they understand the underlying ideas and then move on to building fluency. It is ideal for kids learning these concepts for the first time or those who are struggling. The interactions target problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.

MULTIPLICATION SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
* Understand multiplication as a repeated addition problem
* Understand and use the symbol for multiplication
* Find unknown numbers in multiplication problems
* Create multiplication models involving equal group scenarios
* Use arrays to solve and represent multiplication sentences

DIVISION SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
* Understand, represent and solve division problems involving fair share and repeated subtraction scenarios
* Understand and use the symbol for division
* Find an unknown number of groups (missing divisor)
* Find an unknown group size (missing quotient)
* Understand division as the inverse of multiplication

COMMON CORE STANDARDS
Farm Factor covers the following learning standards:

3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

3.OA.A.2 Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.

3.OA.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

3.OA.4 Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = _ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?
