Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Provides video examples of children reading and answering questions so parents can make appropriate judgments about their child's own level.
  • App is well-organized with specific examples.

Considerations

  • The materials parents will need to support their children (specific books, dictionary, etc.) are not linked in the app; parents will need to search and acquire them independently.
  • Many parents may not be comfortable providing the specific levels of supports the app suggests, as they are formal learning strategies typically provided by teachers not parents.

Mindprint Expert Review

This useful app is designed for parents who want to work with their children to develop reading comprehension and fluency. The app provides age-specific guidance of what parents should expect from their children's fluency and reading comprehension. Information includes the expected types of books with suggestions by genre, length of independent reading, and expected level of comprehension. Parents can watch videos of age-appropriate readers so they can gain a better perspective of their child's own level and set appropriate goals. Parents who are comfortable with their children's reading abilities and their school's support system will likely find this app unnecessary. However, homeschooling parents or parents concerned their child may not be receiving the necessary school support may find this app to be a uniquely helpful resource.
