Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • App provides an audio lesson followed by multiple examples.
  • The app explains fractions in a very visual format which can aid significantly in comprehension.
  • The app "checks in" on how a student is feeling and appropriately intersperses review problems.

Considerations

  • The narrator speaks much too quickly and the lessons are not provided in written form.
  • The virtual manipulatives can be difficult to maneuver.
  • The app can feel very repetitive.

Mindprint Expert Review

Woot Math is a fine app that uses virtual manipulatives to help students conceptually understand fractions. It is primarily designed for teachers to use within the classroom, but parents can use it at home by logging in as a guest. The app includes different levels which the child must graduate sequentially. The app may start off too basic for older students and they will be unable to skip to harder lessons. Each lesson begins with a voiced-over lesson and an automated use of the manipulatives followed by a series of problems the student must solve independently. The lessons are good, but the narrator speaks much too quickly and might confuse some students. Other students may find the virtual manipulatives very difficult to maneuver. Most students may be bored by the repetition without any real incentives embedded in the app. Fractions are a conceptually difficult concept for many students and this app could provide the right type of visual lessons and practice for some students. For others, it could be confusing, repetitive and frustrating. Parents who try this app should sit with the student at first to be sure this app will be an effective and helpful tool. They can also be there to explain incorrect answers which the app does not do at all.
