Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The site uses inviting, colorful graphics and does not use grade levels which could make it appealing, including those who are not at grade level.
  • Each activity is a short problem set with no timer and only positive feedback so students should not get discouraged.
  • Purchasing the upgrade allows students to collect badges and stars, unlimited practice, and parents or teachers can track progress.

Considerations

  • Since students can choose any topic, adults should be available to be sure the student is selecting the right type of work.
  • This site does not provide instruction, nor does it explain incorrect answers.
  • There is no voice over and students may need help reading and understanding the problems.

Mindprint Expert Review

This site provides fine early elementary math practice with its cute, colorful graphics and positive reinforcement, but it will not be a good choice for struggling students. Students can try the site activities for free, but parents will need to upgrade to have unlimited usage, track progress, and enable students to receive virtual rewards for their work. After selecting a personal monkey avatar, students choose from math topics including number recognition, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and geometry. While some parents may appreciate that there are no grade levels, students using independently may have trouble selecting the appropriate category and level. Each activity is a 10-question problem set. The problems are written in a clear, easy-to-read font, and answers are fill-in-the-blank or multiple choice. There is no timer, the monkey-themed graphics are appealing, and the feedback is always positive: “wrong answer, but not to worry, practice makes perfect!” or “You’re amazing!” Unfortunately, the questions do not have voice-over, and the language in the word problems could confuse some young readers. The site does not provide any instruction or explanation of incorrect answers, so while students can have good practice they will need an adult available if they want to advance their learning. Overall, the website uses a positive,child-friendly approach to provide extra practice, but an adult will need to be involved to ensure good learning is happening.
