Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • New instruction is provided in small, digestible amounts with an immediate opportunity to apply the skill.
  • Students receive immediate feedback on mistakes, with multiple options to understand what they did incorrectly.
  • In some classes students have the option for video lessons as well as text lessons.

Considerations

  • If students use the video lesson, they cannot see the text explanation on the screen concurrently and they might struggle with the speaker's British accent.
  • Students who struggle following directions and learning new skills independently might not be comfortable with this online, self-administered approach.

Mindprint Expert Review

Code Avengers is an excellent instructional website for self-motivated students that teaches how to code in HTML, CSS, Python and JavaScript. Students can take the introductory lesson in any course for free, but they will need to pay for the subsequent one to three classes. Classes take approximately one hour each, but users can stop at any point and return to the point where they left off. All lessons are available in text-only format and some have accompanying video lessons. The narrator has a British accent which could be a challenge for students with listening difficulties, but the site always has a text-only option. The lessons are very interactive, with a brief instruction followed by a "try it" activity. Students receive immediate feedback on the activity if they make a mistake, and they have multiple alternatives for understanding the error, including emailing a question. Students receive points for proper answers and point deductions for using the help options. The site does a nice job of reinforcing the learning, both through visual cues where appropriate and re-applying information from previous lessons to help with retention. These features will be particularly beneficial for students with weaker memory skills. While students with limited interest in coding are unlikely to find the lessons engaging, students who intrinsically want to learn to code will find this site to provide excellent progressive instruction.
