Pros

  • Interesting and fun presentation of important health education topics.
  • The video activities are interactive as the actors pause for discussion, present hands-on activities, and include an exercise video.
  • Great for schools and useful for home instruction as well.

Considerations

  • Adults should be aware of system requirements for the game, that special software must be downloaded, and that it takes time to download files.
  • An adult may want to supervise students when cooking along with the demonstration.
  • The videos are colorful, busy, and information flashes across the screen which may be a concern for students with visual processing weaknesses.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a great site which uses videos and an online interactive game to teach nutrition and health education to children in grades 4 through 8. The free 14-day trial allows user to sample one 40-minute video and one level of the online game. With purchase, users can access six videos, all levels of game play, the online community where students earn badges for sharing videos, photos, and recipes, activity materials, and assessment tool. The video actors look, speak, and act in an age appropriate fashion and present important topics in a relatable way. For example, the sample video demonstrates why it is important to eat a good breakfast by first presenting a scene about a student skipping meals to make weight for a wrestling competition. The story incorporates rap music and comedy to teach students what happens when you deprive your body of food. There is a cooking demonstration for a healthy, easy-to-make breakfast, exercise video with a professional athlete, and time to pause for discussion questions and guided activity. The interactive game has six levels for subscribers where users walk around a virtual school and make decisions and learn about nutrition. Parents should be aware of the system requirements for the game and that it is necessary to download software for play. Overall, this site is a fun way for middle school students to learn important information about diet and nutrition.
