Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Giggle Poetry introduces many types of poems that could be fun and motivating for students.
  • The site has several fun games, including tongue twisters and riddles.

Considerations

  • While the general feel is humorous and playful, some of the themes might be considered inappropriate.
  • The site is visually distracting and activity instructions difficult for children to navigate on their own, so it is best if parents navigate the site and pick out appropriate learning activities.

Mindprint Expert Review

Giggle Poetry is a creative website that can be used as a resource for adults to find poetry and rhyming activities to help strengthen phonological awareness, reading, writing and expressive language skills. There are several main components to the site, including Poetry Class, Poetry Fun and Poetry Theater. Poetry Class has instructions about how to write certain types of poems, such as "Dream Poems" or "Sound Poems". Poetry Fun has short games/activities, including riddles, tongue twisters, and fill-in-the-blank poems. Poetry Theater has short plays children can perform together. In general, the content and design in the site are humorous and playful, which would be appealing to children. However, some of the themes (Smoker's Epitaph Poems) may be considered age-inappropriate. The site has many advertisements and the pages are crowded and somewhat distracting. Additionally, the instructions for many of the activities, especially in Poetry Class, are long and multi-stepped, and seem more appropriate for parents or teachers to follow and then teach to the student. Given some of the questionable content and the visual distractions, this site is best used as a resource for parents to pick out appropriate activities to do with their children, either on the site or to print and do without the computer.
