Stronger Visual Memory (Bb)

If you more easily remember pictures, colors and numbers and it is harder to remember vocabulary, facts and class discussions

What It Is

Most people have one memory skill that is stronger than the other. If your visual memory is stronger, you will remember pictures, graphics, formulas and charts more easily than what you read or hear.

Using Your Stronger Visual Memory

  1. Pair a picture with words whenever you can. For example, when using flashcards don't just write the definition, draw a picture.
  2. Take time to pause and review the pictures in your textbook. They will help you remember some of the most important information.
  3. In class, if your teacher draws a picture, draw it in your notes to help you remember the key parts of the lesson.
  4. When it's not practical to draw a picture, create a mental picture. For example, to remember someone's name, an image can be created to pair with the name. You can imagine Mary in a wedding dress, Cole as a coal miner, or Peggy as a peg-leg pirate.
  5. Try visual note taking. It might take a little effort to learn, but you will likely find it very effective for your efficient studying over time.
