Mindprint Expert Review

Blurble is a fun, relatively fast-paced game that works on phonemic awareness for younger players and can be used for older students to improve flexible thinking, working memory and processing speed. The game begins with the "Blurbler" who controls the cards for that round. The Blurbler flips a card from the stack and "faces off" with the player to his left. The two players are in a race to say a word that shares the same first letter as the image on the card and win the card. The game continues as the Blurbler faces off with each player. If the Blurbler is defeated, that winning player becomes the new Blurbler. Players decide how long the game goes on, a set amount of time or set number of cards, and the person with the most cards in the end is the winner. The cards are well-made, easy to interpret, and offer plenty of variety with 250 images. Depending on the age and ability of the players, adults can modify the rules such as using beginning sounds rather than letters, answers needing to be in a specific category such as countries or adjectives, playing in teams, or making it all play rather than one-on-one. Whatever the rules, adults should be sure that players are well-matched in ability to be sure that the game provides healthy competition and is not discouraging for children with weaker skills. Disagreements could arise about the object or who answered first, so an adult should be available to moderate. Overall, this is an enjoyable game that affords plenty of flexibility to fit the needs and objectives of the players.
