Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The kit comes with attractive brightly-colored base sheets and strips with plenty of opportunity for experimentation.
  • Can be a great way to teach children to follow pattern instructions, provided they are inherently interested.
  • Children can develop great visual problem solving skills if they enjoy the activity.

Considerations

  • The pattern instructions are relatively hard to follow and limited in scope, and the weaving materials themselves do not have any prompts to help.
  • The strips come on a perforated sheet, but can tear or bend easily, which might cause frustration, particularly for students with weaker motor skills.
  • The kit may feel uninteresting to students who do not enjoy paper or weaving crafts.

Mindprint Expert Review

This paper weaving kit comes with attractive, brightly-colored sheets that give the opportunity for students to experiment with colorful designs while developing motor and visual skills. However, given the ease with which the strips can tear and the challenging instructions, this activity is best for children who are excited to do it and have the patience for it. Children can create their own patterns and experiment with ways colors look together by weaving the strips over and under the slots. The booklet provides instructions for a basic checkerboard and a triangle pattern. However, the instructions rely on reading and following a relatively tedious series of written steps. For example: over 4, under 2, over 2, over 4...; repeat for rows 12-16. This product is best used for free exploration of patterns and color designs without focus on final product. Children will exercise important fine motor and visual skills and good problem solving to create the patterns they want. Conversely, children could quickly feel frustrated if the pattern does not turn out as anticipated or the strips tear. Overall, a good activity for those who enjoy it, but parents want to be available to support students if and when needed.
