Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • A fast-paced, enjoyable word game that will challenge even the strongest students with verbal reasoning, flexible thinking and processing speed.
  • The game does not require much space to play and comes in a cute cloth bag that makes it easy to take with you.
  • There is an easier card side and a harder card side and suggestions for alternative versions to meet different needs.

Considerations

  • Game might be too challenging for students with weaknesses to quickly think of words by their 2nd or last letters, though there could be agreement to modify the rules.
  • Some of the categories on the harder side are adult topics, such as "in a bar" or require knowledge of pop culture, past and present, which might be undesirable for some families.
  • Quieter students might not like the shouting of answers and grabbing of dice.

Mindprint Expert Review

Show Me the Kwan is a fast-paced, multi-player dice game that provides practice with flexible thinking, verbal reasoning and working memory. The game allows for as many simultaneous players as desired. One player chooses a random card and then one of five topics, such as types of transportation, teen movies or things that scare you. Next the player rolls the order die to determines if players will identify words with the 1st, 2nd or last letter that relates to the chosen topic. Finally, the player rolls all the ten letter dice together and play begins. Players race to shout out words that fit both the chosen category and order die, and grab the relevant die. Once the timer runs out or all the dice have been used, each player's score is determined based on the number on claimed dice. A bonus is to make a "Kwan" and use one letter die in all three positions (1st, 2nd and last). The game instructions can be confusing at first, and even once understood, challenging to play. The instructions do offer several variations that will work better for younger players. While this is a good, challenging word game, with so many simultaneous rules and action it might feel too taxing for students with weaknesses in the very skills it could develop. In addition, arguments could easily arise about proper spelling and if a word appropriately fits the category, so a good judge might be needed.
