Mindprint Expert Review

Xoom Cubes is a fast-paced word game that will be fun for students who enjoy competitive words games. The directions suggest a variety of games as well as options for players to make up their own variations. Each player gets a set color of dice and a flag is placed in the middle. The players decide on a specific challenge, such as, "spell a 5 letter word," or "spell a noun." Then after a, "Ready, set, Xoom!" each player rolls a set of dice and tries to meet that challenge with the letters that they have rolled. The first person to meet this challenge grabs the flag from the middle and wins that round. The player's dice should be reviewed to ensure spelling accuracy, and an adult might be needed to make sure disagreements do not arise. Then subsequent rounds continue with an agreed-upon challenge. Adults might need to help with setting the challenges if there is a mixed ability or age group. Since this game depends on speed, it might be discouraging for students with weaker spelling, processing speed or scanning. In addition, it can be quite noisy depending on the surface. Pack A comes with four sets of dice, so if there are more than four players, they can either team up, or buy another pack.
