Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Simple to learn editing tool that points out to proficient writers where they can simplify and clarify their writing.
  • Good for students to use as a step in the editing process to draw their attention to overly complex sentences, words and use of adverbs and passive voice.

Considerations

  • Tool does not specifically explain why sentences or words are highlighted for editing, or give suggestions for how to fix them (except synonyms).
  • The readability score might cause stress and might not reflect the goal of the assignment.
  • Tool is designed for proficient writers and might be confusing or discouraging for students still learning writing mechanics and techniques.

Mindprint Expert Review

Hemingway Editor is a proofreading tool that points out to students where to clarify and simplify their writing. Users import or paste their text into the tool and their writing is highlighted in different colors indicating difficult-to-read sentences, adverbs to avoid, phrases in the passive voice, and words that could be written more simply. The tool gives suggestions to replace complicated words with more simple ones. Since the tool was not designed specifically for educational use, it does not offer other suggestions for how to edit or improve what it has highlighted nor explain the specific rationale for the highlights. Teachers and parents will need to make sure students know why certain sentences or words are highlighted and how revise them to ensure students are learning these important writing skills. Other editor features include counts of the number of paragraphs, sentences, words, characters, and letters and the time it would take an average reader to read the text. It also generates a general readability score for the essay, giving it a grade level score. Students should be encouraged not to focus on this score, as taking meaningful feedback and progressing at their own pace is what is important in developing as a writer, not an auto-generated score. Overall, Hemingway Editor is a simple tool that can serve as a useful pass in the editing process. Students who are using this app should first be encouraged to re-read and edit their own writing first and then use Hemingway before moving to peer editing and teacher feedback.
