Use Strong Attention in Group Work: Checklist (Bb)

If your student has strong attention and might feel impatient with inattentiveness or lack of follow through during group projects

Using Your Strong Attention In Group Work

  1. Strong attention skills can be very helpful in group projects, especially when it comes to time management and helping the group stay on task.
  2. Take initiative to give the group a structure that will help you meet your deadlines, such as creating a checklist or schedule of work that need to be done and who will be responsible.
  3. Volunteer to keep track of tasks accomplished and what still needs to be done. Check in at the beginning and end of each session or over email to keep your team on track.
  4. If group members are distracted by other groups, suggest that your group move to a quieter location so everyone can focus and listen to one another speak.
  5. If you notice that other members are having difficulty staying focused during group work, suggest breaking up into pairs and assigning each pairing a piece of the work. This way, it will be easier for everyone to stay focused.

What To Keep In Mind

While it might be relatively easy for you to focus and get a job done, some of your peers might have difficulty no matter how hard they try. While it can be frustrating when someone is not paying attention or not following through, take the opportunity to find ways to help everyone be more productive. As long as you are not telling people exactly what they should be doing (no one likes that), your group members are likely to be very appreciative of your support.
