Identify a "Safe" Adult

If your child is very anxious or could get easily overwhelmed at school

How To Apply It!

  1. It is important for students who are very anxious to have someone at school they can talk to and provide the security they need if they feel scared, stressed or anxious.
  2. Find someone who understands your needs and who you trust. Oftentimes a guidance counselor, advisor, school psychologist or nurse has the availability to help you when you need it and is experienced dealing with the types of emotions you might be feeling. However, a special teacher, coach or mature friend can serve this role.
  3. Have a parent help facilitate this relationship.
  4. Be sure the trusted person understands he or she is the "go to" person during school hours. That said, you need to understand that the person has other responsibilities and cannot substitute for dealing with problems independently.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

At the most fundamental level, children must come to school ready to learn. Children who struggle with anxiety and other emotional disorders will be more adept at coping with their emotions if they know they have a "safe person", an individual they can trust and go to during the school day if events go awry. This level of security can give children the courage to tackle challenges and a willingness to go to school on even the most difficult days.
