Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The text is written in a relatively understandable and enjoyable way combining information on both art history and anatomy.
  • Students can opt to simply explore the drawings and read the details at their leisure.
  • The interspersed videos effectively break up the text.

Considerations

  • The stories require a lot of reading, and might not fully engage some students.
  • The text includes very specific anatomical and art terminology without look up options.
  • There is no option to assess student learning or retention.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a superb app that tells the story of Leonardo da Vinci's work in anatomy and art, but it may only be sufficiently captivating for the most interested or dedicated students. The app tells the story of da Vinci's life through 11 chapters, with text on the left side of the screen and his associated drawings on the right side of the screen. In some cases, real anatomical drawings also are shown to compare and contrast with da Vinci's sketches. The drawings are interpreted for the reader and explain how earlier works influenced later ones. Interspersed are videos from British experts who provide their personal explanations and interpretations. Alternatively, students can browse through his drawings organized by system and read the paragraphs of description. Overall, this app does an excellent job of providing an enjoyable, understandable and insightful analysis of da Vinci's notebooks for students willing to invest the effort.
