Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The tasks are all simple, quick, and appropriate for the target young audience.
  • Locations are always highlighted on the map, written at the top of the screen and voiced-over for good reinforcement.
  • Students can choose to test themselves on all locations or only add locations as they are ready.

Considerations

  • The app deducts points and uses red Xs and loud buzzes for incorrect answers.
  • Students with slower speed or anxiety might be rattled by the timer in Game mode.
  • The use of child for VoiceOver might not be ideal for some students.

Mindprint Expert Review

iLearn Continents is a good, simple app to help students learn the names and locations of the continents and oceans. The app uses effective multi-modal reinforcement throughout with voice-over, text and showing the location on the map. Students can begin in Learn mode where they see a simple, colorful map of the world. They can tap on any location to see its name clearly written and hear it pronounced. Game mode enables students to identify as many continents and oceans as they can in one minute, and high scores are recorded and saved in the app. In Test mode, students can take as long as they need to identify as many of the locations as they chose to practice in the settings. Unfortunately, test scores cannot be saved for adults to see how well the student did. Overall, this free app is an effective and relatively enjoyable tool to help students learn and remember basic world geography.
