Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Students may find the memes and videos enjoyable and effective to commit definitions to memory.
  • Students are provided with multiple ways to learn a word: idioms, videos, definitions, synonyms, origins and usage in a sentence.
  • Site includes over 1,000 high frequency words.

Considerations

  • The crowded screen, constant ads and moving pictures are very distracting and will make it too difficult for most students to focus.
  • Many of the memes contain sexual references.
  • Words are not grouped and presented in a way that makes it easy to learn a few words at a time and assess knowledge.

Mindprint Expert Review

Daily Vocab is a free website for high school students and adults to improve their exam vocabulary by learning new words through memes (funny pictures) and mnemonics. The site targets Hindi speakers and provides translations and videos in Hindi. Most of the exam vocabulary lists, excluding the SAT and TOEFL, are for exams not used in the United States. The site is very crowded with text, ads and moving pictures and students could be easily distracted. Also, words are presented in long pages, alphabetically, without an easy way to practice and focus on select words at a time. However, the site, despite some inappropriate humor, could be an entertaining way for older students to improve vocabulary. Each word on a list is presented as a meme. For example, the meme for addle is a very animated man holding an egg saying “egg” and a woman commenting, “Being in love must have addled his brain!” Definitions also include 20+ synonyms, part of speech, 5 contextual examples, origin, audio pronunciation (native English speaker/ Youtube video) and mnemonic. Not all of the synonyms are familiar words and there is no look up option. The mnemonics are simple and helpful (e.g for the word addle, add+all : add everything and you will be confused). Users also can watch videos on various topics (e.g. Love Vocabulary for Valentine’s Day, most videos have Hindi accent) or choose to take 10 question multiple-choice quizzes. Answer choices include some challenging vocabulary words with no look up option which is a missed opportunity for learning. Overall, might enjoy learning vocabulary words with memes, but there are more effective and efficient ways for students to learn key vocabulary.
