Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • App is visually appealing with plenty of kid-friendly graphics and the option to import photos and audio.
  • Kidspiration includes a large selection of subject-specific templates to provide students with a starting organizational structure across a broad range of topics.

Considerations

  • Adults will need to show students how to effectively use maps in different scenarios.
  • Students with weaker visual and spatial reasoning skills might find mind maps harder to use than more text-based organization strategies.
  • The functionality is not entirely intuitive and students might need a lot of support to get started.

Mindprint Expert Review

Kidspiration Maps is a very appealing and helpful mind mapping tool designed for students to create visual maps and diagrams to classify and organize information. Mind maps can support students' reading comprehension, help them organize ideas for writing, and categorize information across a broad range of topics. Students may find themselves required to use mind maps throughout their schooling, and Kidspiration is an excellent starting tool. Elementary school students will need teacher support to learn how to create effective maps and lots of practice to get comfortable with the many Kidspiration features and icons. Fortunately, the app includes many built-in templates for a range of scenarios and needs in reading & writing, social studies, science, and math. Unlike mind map tools targeted for adults, Kidspiration is colorful and inviting and includes plenty of kid-friendly graphics, functionality to import pictures, and even the option to include audio recordings. Maps can be saved easily, but students will need to upgrade to save more than five maps or to share files via email. Overall, a superb tool to help students visually organize and present information provided they have the right initial support to get comfortable with the tool.
