Set Page Goals for Reading Assignments

If your student has difficulty sustaining focus and/or finishing longer reading assignments

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Students will set specific page goals to break up their reading if they have difficulty staying focused while completing reading assignments. See student checklist on next slide.

*students* Checklist: Set Reading Page Goals

  1. Estimate how many pages you think you can read comfortably before getting distracted
  2. Use sticky notes to set stopping points for the chunk of pages you will read before a break
  3. When you get to a stopping point, BEFORE taking a short break, reflect upon what you read. Briefly summarize to yourself
  4. If you have a hard time summarizing because you think you lost focus, reduce your page goal for the next break
  5. Over time try to add more pages in between breaks. Keep in mind that different books might require more effort per page, so be ready to adjust depending on what you are reading

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Breaking up reading material by setting page goals can help students feel less overwhelmed with longer reading assignments. This will enable them to focus more on what they are reading instead of how they will finish. For students who struggle with reading for any reason, e.g. attention, memory, processing speed, comprehension or dyslexia, stopping and checking oneself to ensure comprehension will make sure they are not simply reading words but also understanding the material. Research on motivation and effort shows the overriding importance of making learning feel achievable.
