Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Can email summary report of number correct/incorrect from within the app
  • Gives student practice with word problems, an often under-developed skill
  • Word problems use repetitive terminology so students can grow comfortable with wording and develop confidence.

Considerations

  • Answers can only be chosen from a drop down list, not typed in via keyboard, which can be difficult for some child
  • There are no explanations of incorrect answers, just a red X
  • Pictures in level 1 do not show appropriate methodologies, i.e. combining unlike objects for addition and not starting with the largest number for subtraction

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a simple educational app for practicing limited math skills in grades first through fourth. An unengaging home screen allows user to choose from levels 1 and 2 covering addition and subtraction and levels 3 and 4 covering more complex addition, multiplication and division. More than half of the problems are word problems, so this app can be useful for students to practice solving word problems and looking for key indicator words. The app includes high quality pictures with each word problem, which might engage students but will not be useful to help them to solve the problem. Unfortunately, there are also many negatives with this app. The pictures for the first level do not show proper methodology, which could confuse students who try to rely on the visuals. Younger students and those with motor weaknesses may struggle selecting from a drop-down menu rather than typing the correct answer. If students answer incorrectly, they are not shown the correct answer nor how to solve the problem. The problems in level 4 may require students to use paper and pencil to solve, and adults may need to reminded children rather than have them struggle with mental math. The app offers no rewards nor incentives for correct answers. This app is probably best for parents wanting to give students comfort with solving simple word problems through repetition before they move on to more difficult problems, but only for students who have a good understanding who will not be misled or discouraged by the app. *Note: This app was originally reviewed for iPhone/iPad. Some differences might apply.
