Allow Some Types of Background Music

If your child wants to listen to music while doing homework

How To Apply It!

  1. Soothing, unobtrusive background music (classical, Muzak, etc.) will not interfere with most students' focus and might even help you study, but as music becomes louder and sounds more pronounced it is likely to do more harm than good.
  2. If you believe background music helps you study, discuss it with your parents and agree to only listen to certain types of music. Classical music is best. Rock, rap, and pop music should be avoided.
  3. Create a playlist of the agreed upon music and use it while studying so you are not spending time looking for music when you should be studying.
  4. Television, multi-tasking, and other background noises will definitely hurt your efficiency, so avoid those other distractions.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Light background music has been shown to improve learning, since it can improve a student's mood and tempo. However, at a certain level, music can be disruptive and cause a student to lose focus. For some students, silence is best. This might be an opportunity to let students make the decision subject to parental guidance and monitoring.
