Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The animations and music make this a uniquely fun way to practice an otherwise tedious grammar skill.
  • Students can replay animations as often as they need and there is no timer.
  • Students will use good reasoning to understand the intent of the animation.

Considerations

  • The app uses a difficult to read font without the option to have the meanings or examples read aloud.
  • Students keep answering problems until they quit because problems are not grouped, and there is no summary of results or specific phrases that were answered incorrectly.
  • The buzzer for wrong answers can be loud and unnerving.

Mindprint Expert Review

This app offers a unique and fun way for students to practice grammar and vocabulary of phrasal verbs. A phrasal verb is an idiomatic phrase consisting of a verb and another element, typically a preposition. The app includes animations for 100 phrasal verbs such as "stumble upon", "set out", and "mist over". Students can choose any phrasal verb and see the definition, a written example, and an enjoyable animation of the phrasal verb in context. All the animations are based on "Doctor Phrasalstein" in the horror movie genre with accompanying music. The animations are fun and students can replay them as often as they need, making this app particularly helpful for students who may struggle with rote memorization. Unfortunately, in keeping with the theme, the text is written in a script font that some students may struggle with, and there is no option for the definitions to be read aloud. Students can move on to the exercises where they watch an animation and then select from multiple choice options for the correct phrasal verb. The wheel may be difficult for students with weaker fine motor skills, and, there is a loud distracting red buzzer for wrong answers which could rattle students. Otherwise, students will actually enjoy doing these multiple choice questions. They can repeat the videos as often as needed and there is no time limit. The videos are very well done though a few may be somewhat inappropriate for younger ages ("vamp up", etc). Students can do as many or as few questions as they like and the app keeps track of attempts and correct answers and repeats questions the student skipped or answered incorrectly. As a free app it is certainly worth the download for most students to help them discover they can enjoy doing grammar lessons. *Note: This app was originally reviewed for iPhone/iPad. Some differences might apply.
