Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The visual puzzles are suitable for a range of levels and could provide great practice for students with weaker spatial perception.
  • Students can learn about a variety of scientific inventions in a fun way.
  • The game has a fun feel, and most students will be happy to try it.

Considerations

  • The information on the inventors and inventions is buried at the end of the game, where most students are unlikely to ever read it.
  • The written descriptions on the inventions uses scientific terminology that will be unfamiliar to many with no option to look up and solidify understanding.
  • Game prompts students to view an advertisement to continue the game, which is generally inappropriate in a paid app.

Mindprint Expert Review

This unusual app combines a simple visual puzzle with science trivia that most students would be happy to try but probably only students very interested in science will continue to play. Each game begins with a visual puzzle of a famous scientist. Players take as many tries as they need to swap the mixed-up pieces until they create the picture of the scientist. Next, the player selects from the three multiple choice answers the name of the scientist followed by a multiple-choice question of the scientist's invention. Once they answer correctly, they move on to the next puzzle. Their solved puzzles are accessible at the end of the game, which is where students can read about the scientist and the invention. Students begin the game with five hearts, and they lose hearts for each incorrect answer. They are then given the option to watch an advertisement to earn a new heart and continue the game. While the game can be a great source of information for curious students, the inaccessibility of information on the scientist and the invention during the gameplay will limit the amount of learning and retention for most students who might never bother to do the follow-up reading. In addition, there is a lack of diversity among the chosen scientists, and the initial ones include less common inventions (punched card, voltmeter, etc.) and the inventor of automatic guns which could dampen any enthusiasm for learning more. Overall, an app with a great concept, but it might provide real learning only for very curious students.
