Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • App enables students to create a highly customized practice experience in all four operations for both fast facts and multi-digit mental math.
  • Two students can compete simultaneously with a single iPad.
  • App does not give negative feedback for incorrect answers, just requires student to correct them.

Considerations

  • App could be angst producing with a question timer and a problem-set timer running on-screen simultaneously.
  • Students could feel overwhelmed and have difficulty focusing with so many numbers on the screen.
  • App does not track overall performance or specific problems to follow-up.

Mindprint Expert Review

Math Duel provides comprehensive math practice in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, but this app is likely to be suitable only for the most competitive math students. Students can create a highly customized experience by selecting the operation, the number of terms, the amount of time per question, and the largest possible numerical answer. Once they press go, they answer a quick succession of problems fitting the criteria, all the while the problem timer, the problem-set timer, the accuracy, and the number of questions is being visibly tracked on-screen. There is no negative feedback for incorrect answers, and the shaking of the wrong answer is barely noticeable which could actually cause more difficulties. There are so many numbers and timers on the screen that many students will feel distracted and overwhelmed. It is even more overwhelming in the two-player, split-screen mode with double the distractions. Although this app can provide effective practice with fast facts and mental math with larger numbers, this app has the potential to be more discouraging than helpful. *Note: This app was originally reviewed for iPhone/iPad. Some differences might apply.
