Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The game can be played simultaneously with as many players as desired, so everyone is always engaged.
  • The game develops very important reasoning and descriptive language skills rarely practiced elsewhere.
  • A unique drawing game that does not reward artistic skills.

Considerations

  • Students who really struggle with working memory, listening, speaking, processing speed and/or writing skills will be uncomfortable playing without a supportive group.
  • Students with visual weaknesses might struggle to see the small details and/or read the tiny font when they are the describer.
  • Competitive players might disagree on whether or not an element was included in a drawing and/or how "strict" to grade each other.

Mindprint Expert Review

This unique, fun drawing game will be a truly enjoyable way for students to develop their visual, speaking, listening and spatial skills when played with a cooperative group. The instructions can feel quite confusing, though the game is actually quite simple. One player is the describer while all the other players are artists. The describer has 90 seconds to describe a silly cartoon scene that he sees on the card taking into account as many of the scene details as possible, including the relative size and placement of objects. The artists listen and draw what they hear without the option to ask questions or ask the describer to repeat himself. When time is up, the artists switch papers to score each other's drawings. The describer sees for the first time ten elements of the drawing that will earn points. Artists get a point for each of the ten elements they have without reward for how good their drawing is but rather how correct the elements (is the cat the largest animal on the page, is the sun to the left of the cloud, are there at least three buttons on the coat, etc.). Players should agree to the number of rounds in advance, and the describer should rotate among players. Success in this game will require students to understand the importance of big picture elements and spatial relationships before focusing on key details, similar to the thought process of breaking down complex problems. When played with an encouraging group, this game can be fun for a broad, diverse age group and develop important skills.
