Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Students do not need to have any familiarity with sushi to like the cute cards, but the theme might make the game more engaging for some students.
  • Game depends on students making decisions based on combinations of single-digit numbers, which builds basic numeracy skills without feeling like a real math game.
  • Game play is simultaneous there is no waiting around or taking turns.

Considerations

  • The first few rounds might require parental support since there a variety of different card types and students could be confused with the instructions.
  • Students could easily play this game without making thoughtful choices and not really learning as a result.

Mindprint Expert Review

Sushi Go! is a fun food-themed card game that students will enjoy while working on basic skills in addition, multiplication and strategic thinking. The game is designed for 2 to 5 players with simultaneous play to keep everyone engaged. Players begin with 7 to 10 brightly colored picture cards with sushi food including wasabi, tempura, and nigiri. Each card has a different point value, some of which are dependent on accumulating additional cards in the round that will require calculating values using single digit multiplication or addition. In each turn, all players simultaneously choose a card to place down and get the points associated with the card. Then everyone passes their hand to the left and puts another card down. Play continues until all the cards are played. At the end of the round, each player adds up his points. The instructions recommend three rounds per game, but players can agree to any number of rounds. One card type, pudding/dessert, is only counted at the end of the last round and has the potential to swing the final results. While students of all levels and abilities can easily play and enjoy this game, the students who are good at remembering which cards were in other hands and plan accordingly as they decide which cards to play and which cards they want to accumulate will ultimately be most successful and get the most out of the game. Overall an enjoyable game for elementary and middle school students that reinforces basic numeracy skills.
