Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Competitive students will be motivated to improve their math facts speed as they compete against friends.
  • Students that work slowly can team up to help them complete missions.
  • Students are encouraged to be accurate since 5 incorrect answers knock them out of the round.

Considerations

  • The rotating problems may cause students to confuse 6 and 9, particularly those with visual detail or discrimination weaknesses.
  • Students may struggle handling double-digit mental math problems in a competitive game format.
  • The higher rounds are very challenging given the time constraints which could cause frustration.

Mindprint Expert Review

Operation Math: Code Squad is a great app that will help students improve their math fact speed with up to four simultaneous users. Like Operation Math by the same manufacturer, students practice math facts with numbers 1-20 for addition and subtraction and 1-12 for multiplication and division. As a secret agent team working for Agent Prime, students work together to defeat Dr. Odd as they complete a mission consisting of five rounds for each single math operation or combination of math operations. Rounds become increasingly difficult as students have sixty seconds to correctly answer 7 problems in the first round to 23 problems in the fifth round. If students do not complete all problems within the allotted five minutes, the time bomb explodes and the words “Mission Failed” cover the screen. Therefore, this app may not be a good choice for students who have anxiety, low confidence in math or have slower processing speed. However, since students can play as a team, students may have a greater chance of success than in the Operation Math single player game and may not feel personally bad. Students can also play against each instead of as a team and track their results. This is a fun math app that provides plenty of practice and effectively encourages multi-player gaming and cooperation. Note: This app was originally reviewed for iPhone/iPad. Some differences might apply.
