Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The coins are realistic. Quarters are shaded to differentiate from nickels to help young children, with the risk, however, that a child could rely on the shading rather than the true appearance of the quarter.
  • Young learners can become comfortable with how to add coins without getting nervous about making addition errors.
  • App has no negative feedback.

Considerations

  • App has no engaging features to encourage a student to play.
  • Students never progress to needing to add the coins independently, so the app's teaching value is limited.
  • There is no option to track student's usage or performance.

Mindprint Expert Review

This very simple app provides a fine introduction to adding coins, but it is not engaging and does not help students effectively achieve mastery. Students are shown realistic looking coins on the bottom half of the screen and a target value. The student drags the correct combination of coins to the top half of the screen to achieve the target value. The counter at the top of the screen adds the coin values for the student, so the student does not need to add the coins independently at any time. The student can move coins back and forth as much as necessary to achieve the solution, but cannot move to the next problem until the right answer is achieved. There is nothing to excite or engage a young student, but the app can be a reasonable starting point for familiarizing a child with how coins look, their values, and how they can add up to different combinations. Note: This app was originally reviewed for iPhone/iPad. Some differences might apply.
