Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Each answer choice is immediately followed by a clear, thorough explanation.
  • Because each answer choice is immediately followed by an explanation, this is great choice for studying for a small bit at a time.
  • Progress report is thorough and even provides the average time per question which can help anxious students learn to pace themselves without a timer.

Considerations

  • Students with weaker working memory skills may get frustrated because they need to scroll through screens to view questions and passages.
  • There is no timer which may limit benefit of test-taking practice because some students will need a timer to learn to pace themselves as they go.
  • There is no in-app scratch pad for math work, so students will need pencil and paper which may be inconvenient for on-the-go study.

Mindprint Expert Review

This app provides convenient, on-the-go ACT test-taking practice. Students begin by setting a daily goal number of questions to practice and then choose from the available topics. 149 limited questions are free to trial, but access to all topics, review of formulas and 1,362 questions require an upgrade. The app focuses exclusively on test-taking practice and all questions are similar in format and look to the actual ACT. Students will need pencil and paper to work through math problems. Because of limited screen space, particularly on the iPhone, they will need to scroll through screens to read and answer questions on most topics. Students can view their progress and test results to see percent correct, as well as the average time per question. However, there is no timer at the bottom of the screen for testing which may be a plus for anxious students but a loss for students trying to set a reasonable pace. The best feature of this app is that each answer choice is corrected immediately followed by a thorough, easy-to-understand explanation for both correct and incorrect choices. This is especially helpful for on-the-go practice because even answering one question and reading the explanation is a valuable use of time. Students who guess correctly can feel good about their success but still read and understand why. Overall, this app can be a good choice for independent, motivated students to get good small bursts of test-taking practice.
