Pros

  • The brightly colored chips are attractive and well-made and make the game appealing for all ages.
  • The players can agree on rules to make play more appropriate for everyone (use of the timer, size of the game board, difficulty of the pattern).
  • Develops many skills simultaneously: spatial perception, working memory, abstract reasoning and planning.

Considerations

  • The game is very visually stimulating and could feel overwhelming for those who are not comfortable with visual pattern analysis.
  • Players will need to rely on a strong combination of spatial perception, working memory, abstract reasoning and planning to be successful and it can feel very mentally taxing for those who are not strong in these skills.

Mindprint Expert Review

Juxtabo is an unusual and challenging visual strategy game played with two-sided, brightly-colored chips. Chips are randomly placed in a square grid. Each player starts with two pattern cards of three or four colored circles and seven chips in his hand. On your turn, you have one minute to place anywhere from two to seven chips to create the patterns on your cards. If you can create it you replace your card with another and keep going with the objective to collect as many cards as you can. The trick is that you are changing the board as you play, by matching a color on one of your chips to a color on the board making the color on the other side of the chip the new color. Scanning the board and finding the patterns is very challenging, as you must be able to mentally flip the orientation of the cards, plan multiple chips ahead to achieve some of your targets, and when you get more advanced, work to block your opponents from building their patterns. However, since there is no reading involved, younger children who are strong with spatial perception and abstract reasoning could compete effectively against adults. Overall, this attractive, well-made game will provide a great new challenge for those who enjoy visual strategy games.
