Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The game for 2-5 players adds a different twist to the traditional trick taking card game since the goal is not to score points and keep low cards.
  • Players exercise flexible thinking and planning skills as they map out their strategy of what order to place their higher cards, so they end up with their lowest card for the 7th trick.
  • Cards have a fun, simple design when compared to many other playing card options, making them a good option for students with weaker visual discrimination.

Considerations

  • It can take many rounds to play until there is only one player remaining, so some players, including most younger ones, might find it hard to sustain attention for all the rounds. Players could agree to end the game early.
  • Young students might find the game confusing at first, though this is an opportunity to develop their skills in following directions.

Mindprint Expert Review

Panda Head uses cute cards with pictures of pandas in costumes and an unusual twist on trick taking card games to help students develop flexible thinking and strategy skills. Each player starts with seven cards. On each turn, he must play a card that is either the same or higher than the card that is down. If a player does not have a card to play, he must throw down his lowest card. The object is to end the round with the lowest card. The player with the highest card accumulates that number of points. Play continues until someone reaches 21 points and he becomes a "drowsy panda". That player becomes a "pooped panda" (loses) when he reaches 21 points again and is out of the game entirely. The winner is the last player in the game. The game requires players to strategize about when to play their high cards, so that by the seventh trick, they only have a low card left. Panda Head adds a twist to traditional trick taking game in which the player has to think about how to use his higher cards over the course of six tricks while holding on to the lowest card possible. Since players never draw from the deck during the round, it does not have the same element of chance nor do young players need to worry about being able to hold all of their cards. The panda theme adds a cute visual touch to the game. Overall, a nice simple game that offers an interesting twist on traditional card games.
