Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • This game encourages out-of-the-box creative thinking -- the ideal of brainstorming -- and can be a great warm-up activities in schools and work.
  • The game requires no reading and flexibility in rules to make it appropriate for a broad audience.
  • Students develop self-advocacy skills as they lobby for their ideas and judgment as they take on the role of deciding the winner.

Considerations

  • Might not be the best choice for most groups if simply looking for a fun, easy-going game.
  • Requires appropriate environment to elicit the most creative responses from everyone, which is the way the game becomes authentically fun.
  • When children are playing, might require a single adult judge to ensure comments are constructive and everyone feels comfortable speaking freely.

Mindprint Expert Review

Disruptus is a unique game that could take many people well out of their comfort zone but could provide excellent practice in creative, flexible thinking for those who persevere. The goal is to come up with new ideas for familiar objects. The roll of the die instructs the players to create something entirely new from the objects on two cards, add a new element to the object to improve upon it, use the object for a completely different purpose than originally intended, or identify the purpose of the object and come up with a better way to achieve the purpose. The appointed judge is expected to select the best idea based on originality and craziness, and players are encouraged to advocate for their ideas. The game includes 100 high quality, large image cards and a single die. The cards are mostly brightly colored with a single recognizable illustration. There are some sepia photographs of scenes that students might find confusing and somewhat uninteresting. The fun factor is very dependent on having the right group of players who are excited to think creatively, share their ideas and do not take it personally if the judge does not select their idea as the winner. As a teaching opportunity, adults can use this game to encourage creative, flexible thinking. However, they will want to think carefully about the children playing and how to create a comfortable environment to share their ideas. Factors to consider include whether or not to play individually or in teams, with or without the timer, how best to elicit responses from reluctant responders, and who might need help judging given the group dynamics. Overall, a unique game that can bring out wonderful ideas and thinking, but it could fall flat with an unenthusiastic group.
