Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Requires players to think ahead and anticipate the potential different spatial relationships of specific moves from where to place a chip to how it could move.
  • The tower is quite sturdy and chips do not fall out as can happen with the original.
  • The game is bright and attractive and most kids will be interested in playing at the outset.

Considerations

  • It is easy to over or under turn the tower which could cause chips not to fall properly and player to lose track of the game which can be very frustrating, particularly late in the game.
  • Will be hard for students with weaker spatial skills or working memory to see the board and anticipate the moves.
  • Does not offer the simplicity and easy teaching options of the original.

Mindprint Expert Review

This game takes the traditional Connect 4 game and increases the demands on spatial perception, working memory and planning skills in a way that will be a great challenge for some and too much for others. Like the original game, the object is to take turns placing chips and try to be the first player to place four chips in a row before your opponent. In this version of the game, however, the chips are placed in a 5 row, twistable tower, with the option to twist one row of the tower one move to the right or left on every move, thus potentially changing the ordering of the chips in every row below. This can add a sufficient layer of complexity to the original game to make it more challenging for players who feel as if they have "graduated" from the original. However, parents will still want to start children with the original game where they can more easily see the entire board, visually understand the direct consequences of every move, and plan ahead. In addition, this version could be frustrating for young players who might easily over or under-twist on the turn. When this happens, the chips do not fall into place properly and players could lose track of what the correct columns alignment should be. This new version will do more to develop working memory and spatial planning, but it lacks the simplicity of the original that makes it so great.
