Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The space theme might attract some children, and there is some background information on each planet included in the box.
  • Students will implicitly be evaluating probability without having an explicit lesson.
  • Students will have some simple addition practice when they add up their point totals.

Considerations

  • The game lacks much excitement and many students might not enjoy it.
  • The inclusion of Pluto as a planet, even though explained, could be misleading.

Mindprint Expert Review

Odd World is a simple, solar system-themed game that can help students begin to understand basic concepts of probability and chance. Each attractive square card has two planets on one side and only one of the two on the other side. The object of the game is to score points by acquiring odd numbers of all nine planets (Pluto is counted as a planet but the explanation of its re-classification as a dwarf planet is included in the instructions). Players take turns picking from the top of the pile that has the two planet side facing up. The player decides, based on the 50-50 odds, of keeping the card for himself or giving it to another player. When one player has acquired all nine planets the game is over, but players only earn points for the planets for which they have an odd number of cards. For example three Neptune cards will earn you three points, but four Jupiter cards will earn you zero points. Players then tally up their points and the player with the most points wins the game. Players implicitly begin to understand the concept of 50-50 chance and the probability of someone acquiring all nine planets and ending the game. However, the game feels slow-paced and because there is such a high element of chance many students might not find it very compelling.
