Mindprint Expert Review

ACT Prep is a thorough, free app created by Varsity Tutors which students learn and improve only through practice problems. The app includes plenty of authentic practice problems, including ten diagnostic tests, 202 practice tests, a question of the day, pre-made flashcards (essentially more test questions) and a flashcard maker feature. Students choose the type of practice they want by subject and sub-topic. If they are at a point in their studies to know what they need to do, they can get very effective practice. If they need more guidance, they might easily feel overwhelmed by the choices and not study efficiently. The diagnostic and practice tests provide an estimated length of exam and will display an on-screen timer to help students pace for the actual exam, but it can feel stressful. Students will be able to view the percent correct score, number correct, number incorrect, total time plus brief explanations for correct answers. Learning by Concept and Flashcard by Concept sections enable students to work for as long as they wish without a timer, but these sections are also practice questions, just with the opportunity to see the answer immediately following the question. Depending on the device and topic, students will need to switch between screens to view both the question and answer and there is no in-app scratch pad for math problems, which can cause difficulties for students still mastering concepts or those with weaker working memory. The best feature of the app is the Flashcard Maker because students can use the in-app camera, audio and text to create great-looking flashcards. Users should know there are constant advertisements to upgrade for the company's tutoring service. Overall, this is a good, free app which provides plenty of authentic test-taking practice and has an attractive flashcard maker for students who have clear direction on where they need to practice.
