Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • A fun, fast-thinking game that will help younger students practice letter-sound correspondence and categories.
  • Quick games with easy set-up that can be played with a large or small group.
  • Students with weaker skills could play one-on-one with an adult who can help develop the use of strategies such as repeating the letter sound out loud to build efficiency.

Considerations

  • For students with weaker processing speed or working memory, the fast-paced competition could be very discouraging if playing with the wrong group.
  • When played by the instructions, there is room for disagreements about who called out first or if the word is an appropriate fit in the category.
  • Students with weaker auditory processing might be uncomfortable in a game with constant shouting of answers.

Mindprint Expert Review

Speedy Recall is a simple, fast-paced, competitive word game. The game includes two sets of cards, green letter cards and yellow category cards. One person simultaneously flips over a letter card and category card. The players are in a race to call out a word beginning with the letter that meets the category criteria. For example, with the letter F and category Type of Sport, someone can call out, "football!" Whoever calls out a correct answer first, takes the category card. The person who collects the most category cards wins. Players can agree on how long to wait for someone to think of an answer before flipping over a new letter card. Games are short and will be suitable for younger children or those with weaker attention. However, the game is open for disagreement over who answered first and whether or not the answer is acceptable which can be a good learning experience for some and could be problematic for others. Overall, an enjoyable game for most group that encourages students to think quickly and flexibly to draw on their existing knowledge and vocabulary.
