Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Playing build familiarity with geometric figures and their relative volume and surface area.
  • The shapes are very attractive and well-made.
  • The game will offer ongoing challenge as players improve, but games do not take as long as similar-type visual strategy games.

Considerations

  • Does not require students to understand the geometric principles (e.g. how the volume is calculated) and uses terms like largest area rather than the correct surface area.
  • Students who do not enjoy visual strategy games might find the game dull.
  • Students might find the instructions confusing at first, but they should get the hang of it after a game or two.

Mindprint Expert Review

Geometry Strategy is a challenging visual strategy game for two to four players that will be enjoyed most by players who like chess and visual puzzles. It can develop strong working knowledge of surface area and volume. Each player starts with 10 well-made geometric pieces including a sphere, helix, and dodecahedron. Each player has his own color and can choose any set-up on his own quadrant of the board. The goal is to have one's sphere reach the center of the board while preventing opponents from the same objective. Pieces can move one or two squares at a time, and can defeat another player's piece depending on which of the challenges is in play: volume, surface area, or number of flat surfaces. Players are provided with the ranking list depending on the challenge which they can consult as needed to decide how they want to move and which piece wins the challenge. The challenge can change during the course of the game, so players need to be careful that their strongest piece can suddenly become the weakest. The game requires visual-spatial awareness and reasoning, and a lot of working memory tracking the different types of pieces and their relative values in the current challenge. While not everyone will enjoy this game, it develops the same abstract reasoning and flexible thinking skills as chess with the benefits of shorter games, attractive shapes, and the option to play with up to four people. Note that though the game has students using geometrically correct comparisons, students are never required to think through and apply geometric principles independently.

Manufacturer Description

Geometry strategy is an exciting game for bold and courageous players, where the strategic mind and the different piece's qualities will win the game. Can you protect your sphere from aggressive tetrahedrons and hunting cones on your way to the target - the bullseye? Can you - and should you - challenge your competitor's pyramid with your cylinder? Is attack always the best defense when facing a solitary prism? Is your strategy valid all though the game - even as the conditions are suddenly changing.
