How To Apply It!

  1. Coaching students how to present themselves effectively will have enormous long-term benefits.
  2. All teachers and parents can provide constructive coaching. The goal is to provide feedback that is encouraging and helpful and does not make a student self-conscious and reluctant to participate for fear of criticism.
  3. Provide any feedback confidentially or in an environment where a child feels safe and won't feel embarrassed in front of friends
  4. There are many programs to teaching public speaking skills. One to consider is Erik Palmer's (http://pvlegs.com/) PVLEGS (Poise, Voice, Life, Eye Contact, Gestures, and Speed) delivery approach. He urges teachers to teach each of these components explicitly as mini-lessons. These lessons will look different depending on the class level and make up of the group.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Teaching the "how" of public speaking helps students develop confidence and comfort speaking in a group and communicating their ideas effectively. This support is especially important for students with language delays and anxiety. Encourage students to participate daily in class discussions, presentations, and performances to get the practice they need.
