Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Colorful book includes short passages covering the an interesting, broad range of history of robotics and the uses and purpose of robots in different settings.
  • Includes assembling three different robots with a wind-up that enables them to move that is likely to excite children.

Considerations

  • Reading the book will require significant adult support, including modifying or explaining complex vocabulary and concepts.
  • The instructions for the models are complex and the pieces require a careful hand, so an adult will likely need to take the lead which can be frustrating for a child.
  • Some of the topics might be upsetting for young children, including using robots to disarm bombs and robot doctors.

Mindprint Expert Review

Build The Robot is a combination book with 3-D model activity that is best for students really interested in robots and who enjoy building activities. The book includes short passages with colorful pictures that give the history of robotics and the use and purpose of robots over time and in various settings, including the workplace, outer space, and areas of danger. Children who have a specific interest in robots will find the pictures engaging and the facts and anecdotes interesting, but the text includes advanced vocabulary, and does not consistently define complex terms. In order to hold even the most interested student's attention, adults will need to read the book with the child, pick and choose specific topics of interest, define terms and modify the language to the appropriate level.

Students will be eager to put together the moving 3-D model robots. However, as with the book, adults will need to work through the models with their children, as the models involve many pieces and require skill and patience to put together that will be a challenge even for many adults. Adults can engage children as they follow the steps by taking them through the sequential process and having them hold and hand over pieces, or fit some pieces through the slots while the adult holds the model securely. However, most of the work will need to be done by the adult because the model shifts easily while working on it, the cardboard pieces bend relatively easily and some pieces do not fit very well together, even requiring cutting a bigger slot for the cardboard pieces to fit through. Overall, Build The Robot will be appealing to children enthusiastic about robots, but parents should expect to have a lot of patience and use alongside the child.
