Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Student-friendly, safe site that makes it easy for elementary and middle school students to find and choose books.
  • Enables students to track and visualize their reading progress without the pain of book logs.
  • Enables adults to effectively monitor students' reading progress and give them choices/recommendations.

Considerations

  • The book descriptions have lexile and age levels which might upset students reading below grade level.
  • The BookQuest and recommendations could be better customized for individual students.
  • Adults will want to know that while the site also links to the library, it does link to Amazon for students to purchase the book.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a fantastic free website with accompanying app to help students find age appropriate books and log and manage their reading. Adults begin by registering an account for themselves and for their elementary or middle school child(ren). An easy search enables students to add books they have read, are reading, or want to read. If appropriate, adults can have students record their reading time. Students are awarded badges for completing books, writing book reviews, recommending books to registered friends, and inviting friends to Bookopolis. They can find new books by a simple search by author, title or genre, seeing books recommended to them by friends, viewing Bookopolis general recommendations, or doing a guided search by following the Bookopolis BookQuest prompts about grade, genre, book length, etc. When students find a book, they can link to Amazon to purchase or a link to borrow it from their local library. Once they have read the book they can opt to write a simple review or a guided book report. Overall, this site provides a wonderfully effective integration of technology to encourage students to read by helping them find books easily, visualize their progress in reading time and finished books, write about the books they read, and interact around their reading with a community of their peers.
